NSA Dating

Although there aren’t specific rules to casual dating, there are definitely guidelines! These guidelines are often overlooked, leading to the demise of what could have been a great relationship. As long as you’re both on the same page, you should be able to make it work. Here are some of the most important guidelines:

1. Explore Your Desires

Unlike a relationship, you have the freedom to try out a variety of things. Take the experience to try out new positions. Try new techniques and don’t be afraid to ask for pointers while you’re doing so. Since you aren’t planning to spend your life with a casual dating partner, you should feel more comfortable trying things you wouldn’t normally try.

This can be anything from new holes to role-playing. The type of thing you might hesitate asking a significant other to try with you. It’s a great way to develop techniques, while also allowing you to explore your own sexual preferences. Don’t be shy and don’t hold back. But, make sure you’re asking your NSA dating partner what works and what doesn’t.

2. Establish Boundaries

Following the rule above, establish your boundaries. You’re not in a relationship, but there is still a level of respect you’re required to show your casual dating partners. You need to maintain an open communication about what is expected and required. This ranges from the boundaries of the arrangement to the comfort of sexual preferences in the bedroom.

You want to make sure you’re both on the same page. Otherwise, you might end up with an awkward moment when things go too far. In some cases, that can be physically traumatizing, while in others, emotionally. Either way, it complicates the arrangement. Often a lack of communication will lead to ending the arrangement altogether.

3. Don’t Act Like Partners

Often times, people in a casual dating relationship don’t see the harm in this one. They think nothing of grabbing breakfast together in the morning. Or heading to see a movie before ending up back at the apartment. There are some casual relationships that can handle a little bit of dating. They are comfortable with the boundaries of the non-relationship and know that it’s nothing more than spending time as friends.

Often, this is more common with friends with benefits anyway. But if you’re new to casual dating arrangements, avoid anything that could feel too date-like. This will send mixed signals to your brain, as well as your partner’s brain. It’s hard to say whether or not spending the night is ever a good idea in a casual relationship. It’s case-specific more than a general rule and it really depends on how you’re both comfortable.

4. Have Fun!

The most important part of the casual dating relationship is that you’re having a good time. It all boils down to letting loose and enjoying the time you’re getting to explore. If the relationship starts feeling restrictive, maybe it’s time to consider the boundaries. You may have shifted into a full on relationship without realizing it, which is damaging to the idea of casual. Reevaluate where you are and where you want to be. Take it from there.
